Ogi Overman – Curator

Since February 2017, Ogi has been the curator of the “Songs from a Southern Kitchen” series at Lucky 32 restaurant. He brought with him to the position a wealth of journalistic, music and promotional experience. He is considered one of the pioneers of alternative, community journalism in the Triad.

He began his writing career at The Sports Page, a free weekly based in Winston-Salem, in 1984. By early 1985 he was named editor, a position he held until the paper’s demise in 1988. He then co-founded ESP Magazine, a free weekly based in Greensboro, where he remained as managing editor until taking a position as sports editor at The Chatham News in Siler City. During his five-year tenure there, he won six N.C. Press Association awards for sports columns and sports coverage. He then returned to ESP Magazine, serving as executive editor for the next five years.

Next he took the plunge into radio, hosting a two-hour daily talk/music show called “Our Town” on WGOS 1070 AM. He wound up back in print journalism, however, co-founding the Greater Greensboro Observer in 2004. That enterprise was short-lived, however, and he then took a position as columnist and feature writer at YES! Weekly, another alternative paper based in Greensboro. He was the editor of the Jamestown News from 2006-’13, where he won nine N.C. Press Association awards.

He currently freelances for Go Triad, O. Henry Magazine, 1808, the Greensboro News & Record, Pinestraw, The Gateway, Business North Carolina, among others.

He is writing a biography of saxophonist Joe McGlohon, appears weekly as one of the “Knights of the Roundtable” on “Triad Today” on ABC 45 at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and again at 11 a.m. Sunday on WMY 48.

In a former life he was a singer/guitarist/harpist/mandolinist with several bands, including Newground, the Joe Sapp Band, and the Original Dogs.

Ogi is a native of Burlington, N.C. and a 1969 graduate of East Carolina University with a degree in philosophy and political science. He and his wife Janet reside in Forest Oaks, south of Greensboro.
